I have read many books and short stories in my life, but none are as depressing or as funny as Candide. I'm not sure that it was intended to be funny, but the writing style and word choice is what makes it funny to me. It is lines like this one that make this story funny,
"I am the best natured creature in the world, and yet I have already killed three men, and of thees three two were preists." Good thing he isn't bad tempered, or he could fight the whole war himself.
